History
Deling City
Kyriss is the fifth Son, seventh and youngest child of famed Galbadian Captain Anton Correll and was born on the 8th of September in his family’s living room home in Deling’s middle class C district. As it transpires, he was delivered by his older Sister Maria who was at the time merely thirteen years old, as the Districts Midwife could not reach the house in time to deliver the child. The two siblings share a strong bond for this reason and she remains the only member of his family the youngest Correll truly respects and gets along with well enough to maintain a relationship.
As aforementioned, being the youngest child of their Family, Kyriss’ early childhood was spent competing with his older siblings for the attention of his Mother and Father, the three eldest being well into their Teens and needing their parents nearly as much as the infant Kyriss did. He soon discovered that if he misbehaved and caused trouble in the household he would receive all the attention he needed, and as he grew older his antics too grew more and more ambitious and disastrous for the family. Such an occasion was an expensive Family party his parents had thrown for a friend of his Fathers birthday that featured a wide array of distinguished Guests including the Army’s Chief of Staff and several high ranking G-Army officials. Kyriss, now six, had quickly grown bored with the proceedings and was now thoroughly tired of the forced pleasant smile his Mother had bribed him with sweets to wear when addressing the Officers. Left unsupervised for a moment, and spotting the large cream covered birthday cake that was to be presented to his Fathers friend at the end of the night, he quickly made for it using a large stool to reach the table before grabbing a handful of the expensive confectionary and hurling it haphazardly with a large manic grin and chuckle at the nearest Army official. In the ongoing confusion several high ranking officers were in turn covered in cake as Kyriss’ parents and older Brothers rushed to restrain the irate six year old leading to the collapse of the cake and the end of what had been a very successful party. The next day, the youngest Correll was taken to the Doctor’s for testing and was found to suffer from A.D.H.D.
As he neared his teens, Anton and Maria Correll were confident that their youngest son would mature and upon finishing primary School education would advance on to the Galbadian Military Academy; a tradition stemming back several generations of Correll Males. Instead, at the age of thirteen, and with his hair now grown to his shoulders in an effort to rebel even further, the young Kyriss began visiting Delings seedy red light district where he was recruited and quickly rose in the ranks of a local gang of youths who called themselves “Marauders” and where notorious for battling rival street gangs, pick pocketing, petty theft and illegal motorbike racing events. At the age of fifteen and a half, Correll had ascended so far in their ranks he had earned the privilege to wear the gang’s insignia tattoo (detailed under ‘appearance’) and now lead a small group of five gang members.
During this turbulent time in his life, Kyriss' own arrogance and self assertion was matched by only one other, his best friend and son of the fagan-esque adult leader of the misfit teens, Caleb Valkyrie. The two were inseparable, often competing in the gangs illicit activities by playfully tallying how much they could steal or how many hostile enemy gang members they could neutralize before they were themselves downed. However, during the time Kyriss had been favoured and described as a son to Xander Valkyrie, the aforementioned adult leader of the gang, Caleb had secretly adopted a distinct resentment and loathing of the gangs favoured son, a resentment that would inevitably fester over the following months as Kyriss' share of the spoils grew to far surpass his own. Jealousy instilled, Caleb persuaded his father to take the gang in a completely new direction that would earn them all more money, more respect and force people to take them seriously. The target had been decided as a jewellery store in the high class A district where Kyriss would lead the four man raiding party. Caleb, who was the most efficient driver, would ensure the four Marauders and their haul would arrive safely back at the gangs hideout.
Kyriss, who's arrogant and self centred nature immediately led him to agree to the proposed plan without a second thought to the consequences, had fallen head first into Valkyries trap. Caleb had decided that he would rid himself and the gang of Correll once and for all by anonymously tipping the Deling police to the raid and escape by simply not appearing with the get away vechile when the time came to escape. His excuse to his father would that be Kyriss had set them all up, attempting to betray the rest of the gang to the Police for the handsome reward that was offered for inner city gangs as well as the reward he'd receive from a rival gang for ridding them of their main rivals and allowing them to gain the valuable illegal races that the Marauders currently ran.
On the day of the robbery, Kyriss and the four other gang members had left as planned as Caleb, disguising his voice, phoned the police and informed them of the exact date and time of the robbery. Everything was going exactly to plan until Valkyrie allowed his arrogance and sadistic nature overthrow his better judgement and parked the getaway van in the alley across from the store to watch his comrades, especially Kyriss', arrest. As planned, the police arrived in force, wrestling the five Marauders from the store and into the back of their cars, but unfortunately for the traitorous Caleb, the Deling city police had also noticed the black clad teen and his van suspiciously close to the scene of the robbery and after approaching him, and foiling his clumsy, panicked escape attempt, apprehended him too. Now in the back of a police van with the five people he'd attempted to betray, Caleb accused Kyriss of being a grass, and proceeded with his original plan of blaming the youngest Correll for the failed robbery.
The six youngsters were formally charged with armed robbery and dealt with the usual Galbadian efficiency. Kyriss father, Anton, had suffered various insults and comments from his high class G-Army friends and, out of shame and embarrassment, had completely refused to pay his youngest sons bail. Kyriss, without the support of his father or his adopted Marauder family, was sent to C-District juvenile detention facility for two years. His five Marauder comrades, including Valkyrie, who now believed him to be a traitor, were also sent to the very same facility and done everything in their power to make his time hell. Three months into his sentence, Correll was offered by the prisons governor, who had witnessed the brutal treatment at the hands of his former friend first hand, the option of spending the remainder of his sentence serving at Galbadia Garden where he would be eventually transferred to the G-Army once he was seventeen. Kyriss, who was well out of his depth at this point, readily agreed and was sent under guard back to his family to gather his belongings and be escorted directly to Garden.
Balamb Garden & Leaving Deling City
Meanwhile the Correll family, whilst Kyriss had been incarcerated, had been subjected to various personal attacks by the outraged Marauders who still believed he had betrayed them. They'd initially started small, usually with bricks through windows or the families cars being damaged, but had recently built to the point of assualting Kyriss' older brothers, Zack and Remus, who were both left hospitalised. Kyriss father at this point, who believed his youngest son was seeking revenge from prison for the family not bailing him out or offering the support he didn't think he deserved, was equally as incensed that has son had been transferred from prison to Garden and promptly disowned him on his arrival, allowing him a night to clear out his belongings before he was barred from setting foot in the house again. That night, Kyriss hadn't slept, his older sister, Maria, had been the only member of his family that had offered support and consolation and had reluctantly agreed to support him in his rash plan to escape. She'd leant him 70g and distracted the two guards at his door by offering them a home cooked meal and a drink as he escaped through the window which overlooked the families garage. He'd visited the families gun room, stealing two of his fathers identical service revolvers and a combat knife before hot wiring his brothers motorcycle, a Honda Phantom, and silently wheeling it into the street before starting it around the corner and escaping the city. His destination would be balamb garden where he would seek sanctuary from the Galbadians. He'd heard stories of compassion and sympathy about the gardens headmaster, Cid Kramer, and it was his last shot. His only option in a world that had seemingly turned against him.
Arriving in Dollet, dishevelled, hungry and completely out of petrol, Kyriss had spent the majority of his sisters monetary contribution on alcohol, but had barley saved enough to pay for his ferry fare across to Balamb. Sleeping rough besides his now empty motorcycle, Kyriss had remained on the beach, hoping to catch the earliest ferry across to the sea-side town across the channel and the earliest opportunity. Dollet, though a safe haven, was still situated far too close to Galbadia for Correll's liking. He knew that safety wouldn't come until he'd reached Balamb and spoken to the headmaster. The following morning, whilst it was still dark, he'd caught the first ferry across, taking immediate advantage of a consignment of petrol stored on the boat to refill his motorcycle whilst the crew were distracted, and landed in Balamb town, immediately driving straight for the Garden.
It had been an unwelcome surprise to the gardens faculty as the filthy sixteen year old that had arrived with just a small holdall that carried all his belongings in the world and a battered motorcycle, demanded a meeting with the headmaster and refused to leave until he had done. His persistence paying off, Cid agreed, mainly out of curiosity, to hear the young Galbadian out, and after hearing his story, contacted Galbadia Garden to begin negotiations regarding Kyriss transfer. Correll was given the vacant dormitory 32 on a temporary basis, and sent to the cafeteria under the watchful eye of a faculty member for some welcome warm food and drink. Initially displeased at the fact Correll had managed to slip the Galbadian guards and his term at their Garden, the Galbadian headmaster had blatantly refused Kyriss a place as Balamb before eventually giving in to Cids persuasion and allowing him sanctuary under the pretence Kyriss had escaped to Esthar and was now under diplomatic immunity. In the end, he reasoned to the Galbadian government, one Galbadian juvenile was an unworthy risk of the entire country going to war to retrieve him.
Kyriss was formally inducted into Balamb Garden shortly after his sixteenth birthday and officially granted dormitory 32 as his place of residence, his student I.D number, 92688. Though quickly settling into Garden life, Correll found it hard to break his old habits, often being reprimanded for his antics and short temper. Adopting the title “Trouble Maker in Chief”, he continued his reign of adolescent pranking and illegal activities to the point of near expulsion. It is a rarely known fact that the only member of faculty that can force Kyriss to toe the line is Cid, the troublemaker having not forgotten his previous kindness and generosity. As far as friends in Garden are concerned, Kyriss mostly keeps brief acquaintances, his previous experiences and severe distrust and paranoia of other students and people, prevent him for putting faith and trust in other students.
Appearance
Kyriss stands at 5’’7 and a half inches tall dwarfing him in comparison to the majority of Garden Students who mostly average at 5’’10 to 6’’ in height. He chooses to mostly wear his long lapel length light coloured brown hair, which blends well with his light blue eyes, in a low ponytail both for the convenience and for the fact it mostly conceals the obvious kinks and curls he inherited from his Mother that embarrass him if he were to wear his hair down. Correll often neglects to shave, leaving a fine layer of stubble near permanently adorning his facial features. Distinguishing features include a smirk which rarely leaves his lips and two tattoo’s;a depiction of a black moon emerging from behind a large cloud formation with the word “Eclipse” in italics above it and a black “Ace of spades” playing card on the left hand side of his chest over his heart with the word “Marauder” displayed horizontally across the image in a black banner.
Clothes wise, Kyriss often chooses plain items such as T-shirts, buttoned shirts and drainpipe jeans usually in black, grey and dark blue. His distinguishing items of clothing include his favorite, and almost trademark, black battered leather jacket and leather Chelsea boots which he is rarely without and wears both items on a daily basis. Although possessing three set’s of the Garden’s uniform, obtained by way of an excuse for attending class without the proper attire and being given a new set, he has only been seen wearing the items for field missions.
Despite being the black sheep of the Correll household and not having much contact with his estranged family, Kyriss does wear one memento of Galbadia and the rest of the Corrells; on his right hand index finger in the form of a G-Army regimental ring that once belonged to his father. It is simple in design, a silver and topaz band bearing the initials “XXIII-G-L-I” the twenty-third Galbadian light infantry. He wears no other jewellery
Analysis
Kyriss is often aggressive, uncompromising and quick to anger, usually choosing to use his fists rather than his brain to settle an argument. He is also skilled considerably in performing short cons such as pickpocketing and taking people and small businesses for a ride; this is how he aquires his money outside of the Garden’s loan. He takes a malicious pleasure in tormenting and antagonising his fellow Students and the Staff of the Garden and revels in the Instructors punishments rather than learn by them. Though naturally gifted militaristically, Corrells impatience, arrogance and eagerness for victory married to his complete disrespect of authority figures of any kind makes him one of Gardens more problematic students. Due to his exclusion from his family and seemingly lonely neglected childhood, Kyriss has developed a hard, distrusting nature of his fellow Students choosing to automatically assume that they are an enemy rather than take the time or effort to make friends or get along. This could also explain his erratic, often disturbing behaviour in and around Garden and why he goes to great efforts to cause trouble and mayhem – everybody has no choice but to pay attention to his antics including the staff. Medical records that are a requirement for all Students to provide from their Doctors upon enrolment state that he is of a compulsive nature, often carrying out acts without thinking of the consequences beforehand. He was also diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder from the age of six and frequently disregards Garden regulations on Alcohol consumption which is strictly forbidden in the School. He is also a heavy smoker.
An unlikely softer side, however, has emerged in the young brash Gunslinger in the form of two Female Students, Mezara Glaven and Kairah Namishiki whom he seems to show a great deal of affection and friendship towards as both are strong Women who are not afraid to give the lewd Correll as good as they get and it seems though he honestly admires and respects them for it. Other redeeming qualities include a fierce loyalty to the few friends he has, an undeterred determined attitude and a competitive nature. He does not hesitate to defend his School and class mates against the sneers of competitive School’s or Students despite his constant insistence that he hates the Academy which he secretly calls his only home.
